چکیده

Falls are a major cause of injuries and hospital admissions among elderly people. Thus, the caregiving process and the quality of life of older adults can be improved by adopting systems for the automatic detection of falls. This paper presents a smartphone-based fall detection system that monitors the movements of patients, recognizes a fall, and automatically sends a request for help to the caregivers. To reduce the problem of false alarms, the system includes novel techniques for the recognition of those activities of daily living that could be erroneously misdetected as falls (such as sitting on a sofa or lying on a bed). To limit the intrusiveness of the system, a small external sensing unit can also be used for the acquisition of movement data.

The MobiFall Dataset: Fall Detection and Classification with a Smartphone

Fall detection is receiving significant attention in the field of preventive medicine, wellness management and assisted living, especially for the elderly. As a result, several fall detection systems are reported in the research literature or exist as commercial systems. Most of them use accelerometers and/ or gyroscopes attached on a person’s body as the primary signal sources. These systems u...

An Unobtrusive Fall Detection and Alerting System Based on Kalman Filter and Bayes Network Classifier

Falls are one of the main health risks among the elderly. A fall detection system based on inertial sensors can automatically detect fall event and alert a caregiver for immediate assistance, so as to reduce injuries causing by falls. Nevertheless, most inertial sensor-based fall detection technologies have focused on the accuracy of detection while neglecting quantization noise caused by inert...

Exploring Smartphone Sensors for Fall and Emergency Detection

Falling, and the fear of falling, is a serious health problem among the elderly. It often results in physical and mental injuries that have the potential to severely reduce their mobility, independence and overall quality of life. Nevertheless, the consequences of a fall can be largely diminished by providing fast assistance. These facts have lead to the development of several automatic fall de...

Analysis of a Smartphone-Based Architecture with Multiple Mobility Sensors for Fall Detection

During the last years, many research efforts have been devoted to the definition of Fall Detection Systems (FDSs) that benefit from the inherent computing, communication and sensing capabilities of smartphones. However, employing a smartphone as the unique sensor in a FDS application entails several disadvantages as long as an accurate characterization of the patient's mobility may force to tra...
